FOLKY FISH FESTIVAL

Maramec Spring Park St. James, MO

May 30-31, 2025

The Ozark Snappers

The Ozark Snappers share a repertoire that is equal parts bluegrass, old-time folk, and psychedelic rock. Chris Case sings lead vocal and mixes in effects with an amplified acoustic guitar, while Billy Watkins adds the high harmonies and some mean flatpicking as counterpoint. Chris and Billy formed The Ozark Snappers in 2021, mixing their brother-style harmony singing with hard grassy flatpicking. Billy was born and bred in Southeast Missouri, and has spent nearly 50 years on the bluegrass festival circuit, both as a founding member of The Stringtown Stringband and with his current band Alex Riffle & The Stiff Riffs. Chris was born and raised in North Louisiana, and his singing and songwriting reveal influences of punk, acid rock, and country music. Together, The Ozark Snappers have a sound that stands out in a crowd and will appeal to fans of John Hartford, Norman Blake & Tony Rice, or The Grateful Dead.

Listeners might hear them deliver a soulful rendition of an old Carter Family tune one moment, then launch into a driving, mandolin-heavy take on a classic rock anthem the next. Their performances are lively, heartfelt, and infused with the kind of chemistry that only comes from two musicians who deeply understand each other’s playing styles.

Beyond their performances, Watkins and Case are dedicated to keeping traditional music alive in Missouri. They regularly host jam sessions, collaborate with local musicians, and participate in folk festivals throughout the region. Whether they’re playing on a small-town porch, a festival stage, or an intimate venue, the Ozark Snappers bring a piece of Missouri’s musical heritage to every performance, ensuring that the sounds of the past continue to resonate in the present.
